Can you imagine a day without water?
The Monroe County Water Authority joined water utilities, community leaders, educators, elected officials and businesses across the nation to celebrate the ninth annual Imagine a Day Without Water on Thursday, October 19, 2023.
Imagine a Day Without Water is a national education campaign that brings together diverse stakeholders to highlight the vital role water plays in our daily lives and the importance of continuous investment in water infrastructure. More than a thousand organizations across the country participated in this year’s day of action, led by the US Water Alliance’s Value of Water Campaign. This year’s event highlighted the significance of water in daily life and inspired curiosity about the people, infrastructure and funding that keep the water running in our communities.
“What would happen if you turned on your tap and no water came out? You wouldn’t be able to get a drink, make your morning coffee, take a shower, do laundry or flush your toilet. No water would mean hospitals couldn’t function and firefighters couldn’t do their jobs,” said Monroe County Water Authority Executive Director Nick Noce. “While having clean, safe water at the turn of a faucet is a luxury that many take for granted, we encourage our community to reflect on the people, processes, and massive infrastructure that enable us to have clean water for drinking, fire protection, sanitation and public health.”
While many areas across the country struggle with water supply problems due to flooding, drought and underinvestment in critical infrastructure, Monroe County Water Authority is fortunate to have more than enough water to satisfy current and future needs. MCWA’s primary water source is Lake Ontario, which, combined with the other Great Lakes, contains 20 percent of the world’s fresh water. Although nature provides water, it takes a dedicated team of water professionals, extensive infrastructure and around-the-clock water treatment to produce and deliver clean, safe water to your home.
